SELECTING AN ARCHITECT
There are many methods of selecting an architect, ranging from design competitions to negotiated procurement. You need to determine which approach fits your requirements and designate an individual or committee to manage your selection process. Some common elements to most selection processes are:

Researching Firms

  • Ask colleagues for referrals.
  • Contacting your local chapter of the American Institute of Architects for names of architects.
  • Finding out who designed projects similar to yours that you like.

Requesting Information
Whenever you feel that it is appropriate, ask for as much information from potential architects as you think you may need to make an informal decision.

  • Ask for qualifications and references.
  • Ask for a formal proposal explaining how he/she is going to approach the project.
  • Decide how much cost information to request and when you want to request it.

Consider Interviews
An interview can give you important information on how well you will be able to work with a potential architect.

  • Create a short list of three to five firms to interview.
  • Allow at least an hour for the interview.
  • Decide on location for interview.
